Baziya - Babak Jahanbakhshwith The BAZIYA teamWe talked about love with Jahanbakhsh, known as the “Sultan of Emotion”.
About the days when life got so hard we said: it can't get worse than this... but it did. Even much worse than we imagined.
About the days we thought we couldn't go on, and then, once we had come through them, said to ourselves: we never thought we were this resilient...
This is just one piece of our long, fascinating conversation with Babak Jahanbakhsh.
Watch the full conversation, as always, on Monday on Baziya's YouTube channel.
Baziya - Pouria Bakhtiariwith The BAZIYA teamIs Iran's economy on the verge of collapse?!
In episode twenty of Baziya we talked with Pouria Bakhtiari, writer, economic expert and maker of the Ecotopia podcast. For years Pouria has tried to take economics out of numbers and charts and explain in plain language how it affects our daily lives. This time, in a casual conversation, we talked about Iran's economy: from decisions that, as Pouria puts it, should have been explained to a president with an animation, to inflation that governments themselves started and the path that can lead to hyperinflation — and on to Dubai's self-made people!!!
Watch the full conversation between Ali Ziya and Pouria Bakhtiari on Baziya's YouTube channel and listen in podcast apps.

Baziya - Kia Davoud Esfandiariwith The BAZIYA teamIn these feverish days for the dollar, we gave this episode of Baziya to a conversation with economic expert Kia Esfandiari, and we chatted about a lot! From how the government created inflation and may be profiting from it, to how fewer cats on the street might tell us inflation has risen, to what is going to happen to Iran and how he sees the uncertain future!

What Does It Mean to Be a Nation? Are We One? - Navid Kalhoroudiwith Navid Kalhoroudi*What does it mean to be a nation? Are we one?*
We started this episode of “Baziya” by asking Navid Kalhoroudi: why don't we feel, the way we used to, that there is a single “us”?!
To be “us”, do we have to think alike?
Is the majority always right?
What can keep different people together?
And when “the people” stand against “the people”, which “us” are we even talking about?
This episode is about one of the hardest questions we face today:
Is there still something that connects us, the people of Iran?
Navid Kalhoroudi — researcher and political analyst, a political science graduate of Kharazmi University and the University of Tehran, and a former lecturer at the University of Tehran — is this episode's guest.
Dr Kalhoroudi, whose research covers political thought, national identity and Iran's social and political change, answers questions about today's divisions in Iranian society, unity, disagreement, what people expect of one another, and what it means to be “a nation”.

Baziya - Mostafa Malekian, Mohsen Shabani, Parisa Goudarziwith The BAZIYA teamWhat does happiness mean?
In this episode of the Baziya podcast we were once again joined by Professor Malekian, researcher and philosopher, to talk about happiness — something that has faded badly in these post-war days. Alongside him, two more dear guests with long experience in psychology, Mohsen Shabani and Parisa Goudarzi, joined this warm conversation and shared their own distinctive views.
How long do you think it will take for joy and smiles to return to the noble people of Iran? Will we see heartfelt laughter among people again?

Baziya - Ali Farahmandwith The BAZIYA teamFrom Golden Globe juror to the dangerous-offenders ward of Evin!
Ali Farahmand, the only Iranian juror of the Golden Globes (one of the world's most prestigious film awards), is this episode's guest. With more than 10 years as a film critic, he started out at film-review magazines and at one point worked with Masoud Farasati. His eventful life — from making films in Iran to being jailed over alimony and mahr — has left him somewhat disillusioned with working in Iran, but he carries on.

This episode's guest is one of the much-loved actors of old Iranian cinema. Morteza Aghili, a contemporary of actors such as Behrouz Vossoughi and Fardin, shared remarkable memories of the 1350s (the 1970s), and had interesting views on the singers and actors who emigrated after the revolution. He has lived in America for many years, yet despite breathing problems he still travels back and forth to Tehran, and his love for Iran is stronger than ever.

Seyed Mohammad Sadegh Alhosseini, economist and author of Iran's best-selling economics books, was this episode's guest and warned of a great, uncontainable crisis. What does the collapse of Ayandeh Bank mean for people, what risks does it carry, and how will the government deal with it? He explained many economic and political ideas in plain language — “What is inflation and how does it happen?” and “How does Iran's banking system work, and why are Iran's banks on the brink of bankruptcy?” — analysed the chances of another war, and explained international relations and how the US, Israel, China and Russia see one another and Iran's situation.

Baziya - Sandywith The BAZIYA teamThe strange resemblance between Brazilians and the people of Abadan!
Shahram Azar, known all over Iran by the name of his band, “Sandy”, was this episode's guest. Sandy left Iran unhappily at 26 and took up composing, and later singing, seriously. Blending rap and folk, he started a new style of music, and some even call him the father of Persian rap. His work mixes rhythmic southern songs with folk.
In his own words, he has tried to say serious things in his music: a bitter social theme wrapped in a happy song. Besides singing, for more than five decades he has composed for many popular singers, such as Ebi, Noushafarin, Shahram Shabpareh and even Hassan Shamaizadeh, and he teaches music professionally. Shahram Azar's sweet southern accent and down-to-earth manner give his chat with Ali Ziya a special feel.

Baziya - Hossein Orawith The BAZIYA teamDo mushrooms open the mind?
Hossein Ora was the guest of this fascinating episode. He lived in Iran until finishing his bachelor's, in a fairly poor family. Through his brother, and with a grade average of 12, he was admitted to a master's in architecture in the US. After years of addiction to cigarettes, alcohol, porn and gambling, he decided to quit all his bad habits, and today he spoke with complete candour about his experiences with various drugs and alcohol. Ora, who in recent years has become known to Iranians on Instagram and YouTube as a meditation teacher and spiritual coach, had interesting views on one of the most widely used drugs today: mushrooms.

Baziya - Mehran Ahmadiwith The BAZIYA teamFrom waiter to director.
Mehran Ahmadi is this episode's guest. Most people know him from the series “Paytakht”, directed by Sirous Moghaddam and written by Mohsen Tanabandeh, but over the past decade he has also had success as a director. Ahmadi's unique view of patriotism and nationhood makes this interview well worth watching.
Mehran isn't shy about saying he did manual labour to get where he is. The father of a child born in the 1380s, he sees that generation as full of both good and bad.

Baziya - Hamidreza Goudarzi (Part Two)with The BAZIYA teamWhy and how did Tehran's mayor kill his wife?
Hamidreza Goudarzi — judge in the “Night Bat” case and lawyer in the Tehran mayor's case — returned to Baziya for a gripping conversation about the details of the case of Mohammad Ali Najafi (former mayor of Tehran), and why and how he murdered his wife, Mitra Ostad.
Goudarzi, who is closer to this controversial case than anyone, laid out and analysed every detail in this episode — from everything that happened before and led to the killing, to an analysis and reconstruction of the crime scene.

Baziya - Akbar Khodadadiwith The BAZIYA teamThe fired presenter and reporter who became a taxi driver.
Akbar Khodadadi, a reporter dismissed from IRIB, was this episode's guest. He holds a PhD in economics, studied under Dr Ghaninejad, speaks 5 languages and worked at the News Network — until, in his words, envy and spite pushed him out, and he spent 3 years driving taxis. Despite all the pressure and hardship he never lost hope, and he has now become an entrepreneur.
Akbar Khodadadi now lives in Turkey, and in a warm conversation with Ali Ziya he shared fascinating stories about Iran's economy and the lives of Iranians in Turkey — from the future of Iran to meeting well-known politicians and celebrities there.

Baziya - Akbar Rajabiwith The BAZIYA teamHow can the severe water crisis in Sistan and Baluchestan be solved?
Akbar Rajabi, entrepreneur and social activist, was this episode's guest. Born 18 Khordad 1356, he lost his father in the Iran–Iraq war at the age of 7 — though his view of being a martyr's child differs from what most people imagine. He is the founder and CEO of the NGO “Tolou-e Bi-Nam-o-Neshan-ha” and has spent years fighting serious social harms such as homelessness and addiction.
This episode tackles one of Iran's most pressing concerns: water shortage, a problem that has gripped the people and villages of Sistan and Baluchestan for decades. Akbar Rajabi has found a solution, and with Baziya's audience and the help and generosity of the public, he plans to bring water to 7 villages in this deprived region.

This episode's guest is lawyer Mohsen Borhani. Dr Borhani talks comprehensively about women's rights and Islamic jurisprudence, and explains why a country's laws should be dynamic and based on what most of society wants.

Baziya - Shams Langeroudi (Part Two)with The BAZIYA teamPoetry: a way around forbidden arts.
This episode's guest was again Shams Langeroudi — poet and leading Hafez scholar — but this time the talk was all about what lies behind Persian poetry and the rindi (roguish wit) of Hafez. Why has Iran produced so many poets? Why did some believe Hafez was a mystic, while others think he was a silver-tongued, witty rogue who enjoyed playing with words and confusing the rulers and clerics of his day?
You could say the history of Persian poetry divides into three parts when it comes to wine: first, when wine was simply wine (we've all read Khayyam). Then wine became a way to connect with the spiritual, and mystical wine was born, as in Rumi's poems. And third, Hafez stepped onto the field of Persian poetry and called every earlier meaning into question. With his wordplay, Hafez created something that has puzzled analysts of Persian poetry for centuries. But how did this historical journey happen? How did Hafez reach such a level of rindi? And what does rind even mean?
In this episode, Shams Langeroudi answers every doubt about Hafez and his poetry in his own delightful way.
If you'd like to know why some people tried to have Hafez killed, don't miss it.

Baziya - Majid Kharathawith The BAZIYA teamA wounded, nostalgic voice!
Majid Kharatha, born 7 Mehr 1364, a leading singer and musician who has been making music for more than 20 years, was Ali Ziya's guest this week to talk about the hardships of putting on concerts and being a singer in Iran. He talked about arrests and bans, and said things not everyone would dare to say.
But Majid Kharatha isn't loved only for his music: much of the affection people pour on him comes from his social and civic work — helping the deprived, freeing prisoners and obtaining pardons for people sentenced to death. In his own words, some people come to his concerts without ever having heard his songs, purely out of love for him.
From 1397 he developed vision problems that eventually left him blind, and with intensive care he regained his sight. Even then he didn't stop his charity work, and despite his hardships did everything he could to ease the struggles of people in need.
For all his activity, Majid Kharatha is a firm opponent of social-media bandwagons: he thinks jumping on news and controversy is thoughtless, and over time drains society of critical thinking.

Baziya - Payam Sadeghianwith The BAZIYA teamEven football turned its back on Payam...
In this episode of the Baziya podcast we sat down with Payam Sadeghian, and what he told Ali Ziya may answer many questions football fans and the people of Iran have long been waiting on. The hardships he went through in Iran, the story of his move to Turkey and, of course, the controversy that followed make this conversation very special.
We hope you enjoy it...

Baziya - Dan Vahdatwith The BAZIYA teamTalking about hope may be very hard these days, but here is a man who sees a bright future for Iran. Dan (Danoush) Vahdat — entrepreneur, scientist and a man full of hope — went from the village of Paghaleh near Bojnurd to Sharif University, then Johns Hopkins in the US and Oxford in the UK. Dan, who runs a billion-dollar company called Huma, has combined medicine and technology to improve millions of lives. The paradox of leaving or staying, the dangers of AI, rumours about COVID and vaccines, the importance of hope for the future, happiness and money, and the remarkable effects of exercise on life are just drops in the ocean of this conversation.

Baziya - Doorchiwith The BAZIYA teamDoorchi: a small pearl, perhaps with a big heart.
The name Mohammad Rashidian may not sound familiar, but Mohammad is known by another name: “Doorchi”. Tonight he sat down with Ali Ziya to talk about his life of ups and downs, his fight with addiction, loves and friendships that left nothing but scars, and years of waiting to become one of the new generation's most important hip-hop artists. A boy who started out young as a shoemaker working in the bazaar, but who carried one big goal in his mind every day: to become someone who makes a difference. With songs that came from the depths of his broken heart, he made a balm for millions of broken hearts.

Baziya - Pouria Rahimi Samwith The BAZIYA teamIf life is entirely absurd, why do we live?
Pouria Rahimi Sam, an actor and artist who has always tried to keep himself and his life hidden, opened his heart this time on the Baziya podcast and explored the inner and outer sides of his life. Talking about wounds that may never heal is something not everyone can do, but Pouria — brave and completely honest, as in all his life — sat down and told us what wounds life leaves on the soul, and how you have no choice but to accept them and stand up to whatever the world wants to take from you. As Samuel Beckett put it, “Nothing is funnier than unhappiness”, and Pouria Rahimi — this witty man from Rasht — has wholeheartedly accepted life's absurdity, and stands laughing in the face of life and death.

Baziya - Shahram Shabparehwith The BAZIYA teamThe moves we made to Shahram Shabpareh's voice and songs built the backbone of our memories. This Baziya guest needs no introduction: the man who made singers of most of the singers we know, and who shared his remarkable memories of Siavash Ghomayshi, Dariush, Ebi, Googoosh and more. A man who loves Iran and its people, whose greatest wish is to see the streets of Tehran once more.

Baziya - Amir Bozorgiwith The BAZIYA team“The point is, whatever happens in life, you have to keep going.”
We all see the world with our eyes, but few of us really look at it. Amir Bozorgi was at the peak of success, money and youth, partying every night — until he lost his sight drinking alcohol in Iran. He drank what a friend said was home-made liquor, but it was methanol, and he went blind.
Amir not only refused to give up on life; his passion for it grew. He is one of the most enthusiastic, energetic people anyone could meet, and he also helps others who have been blinded this way — and there are many in Iran — to carry on with hope.

Baziya - Babak Karimiwith The BAZIYA team“I packed my suitcase for the last time!”
This Baziya guest, Babak Karimi, is an actor who has appeared in the work of Abbas Kiarostami and Asghar Farhadi but has never been seen as much as he deserves! The blow of betrayal and separation drove him to bury himself in work, and that journey made a new man of him. His outlook on life makes this one of Baziya's most delightful conversations.

Baziya - Mohammad Fazeliwith The BAZIYA teamDr Mohammad Fazeli — who actually dislikes being called “Doctor” (if you ever meet him, don't call him that) — is one of Iran's leading sociologists and has been “concerned for Iran” for years. On this episode of Baziya, he showed with a thorough analysis how one can reach a safe place in this world, both at home and abroad. After he was expelled from the universities, he realised the answer he was looking for wasn't in academia but among the people. He talked about the causes and results of the Iran–Israel war, the lost balance between government and people, the pros and cons of emigration, the expulsion of Afghans, and what a sociologist's daily life looks like — and said the main way to save the country is to live alongside each other like decent human beings. It sounds hard, but people live on hope.

Baziya - Saman Wilsonwith The BAZIYA team“I'll do a feature with Reza Pishro and outclass him...” Maybe only one person in rap could say that to Reza Pishro, and that's Saman Wilson.
This Baziya guest is Saman Wilson, who goes by “Asl-e Kar” and calls himself one of the main pillars and the godfather of Persian rap. Almost all of us have memories of Zedbazi's songs, and it was Saman and Mehrad Hidden who started the group. But two decades later, none of those rappers are what they used to be. Here we meet a different, 40-year-old Saman Wilson. Joking aside, Saman is the same person — but in this episode he said things we've never heard anywhere: from his upcoming marriage and his admiration for Yas to his hatred of Hichkas's voice and his disgust with rap — the same rap he believes he made great.
